“I know the splint has made me faster and ride at a higher speed for longer (higher top speed and greater speed endurance).”

John Eder

WORLD CHAMPION CYCLIST

Masters Queensland State Championships:

– Flying 200m qualifying ride – 11.06, new PB (previous was 11.09) and State Record – went on to win the Gold medal in match sprints, my first ever Masters State Sprint Title.

– 666m Time Trial – 45.94, new PB (previous was 46.51) and State Record – won Gold medal.

“Previously for the 666m Time Trial I had always started a bit easier, not quite gone flat out for the first lap so I could have a bit more left in the legs to bring it home once the lactic and tiredness kicked in around 100-130 or so metres to go. On this night however I went flat out and as fast as I could the entire way (biting the whole time and thus breathing through clenched teeth) and when my legs started to hurt at 50m to go I could just push through it and felt strong all the way to the finish. I would like to know how fast I could have gone with better conditions.”

Masters National Championships:

– 750m Time Trial – 50.512, new PB (previous was 51.098) – won Gold medal, National Champion, first time ever.

“For the 750m (similar to the 666m TT) I used to start a bit easier, get to what I thought felt like a good cursing pace to save a bit for the last 150-200m. This time however I started as fast as I could for the first lap then coming into the second lap I wanted to just wind it up as fast as I could go but my body just said, “no, this is fast enough” (not sure why, I’m still examining that). I went into the third lap about one second down on my opponent and managed to beat him home by just over 0.2 of a second. My legs did not start to lactic until less than 100m to go then I heard the commentator say the other guy was slowing and I was coming home strong, so I just dug deep and pushed it as hard as I could all the way to the finish (which I would have done anyway but hearing that gave me a bit extra motivation). My lap times were 20.4, 14.5, 15.5. I’ve never had such fast second and third laps. And I know I can go faster for the World’s. I was biting the whole time and thus breathing through clenched teeth.”

– Flying 200m qualifying ride – 11.057, new PB (just beating 11.06 from the Qld States) – qualified 2nd, went on to win Silver, best I’ve ever done at the Nationals.
“In both the SF (which I won 2-1 beating the current World Champion) and Gold medal ride (which I lost 2-1) my competitors, when I got the front, were not able to come round me, which in the past they have always done. So I definitely have more speed and speed endurance.”

“On the conditions for the flying 200m, the guy who qualified faster than me (11.03) and I were told (by the VIS) the track was officially slow by just over 0.1 of a second and thus our qualifying time could have been high 10.8 or 10.9.”
